Comments Off on Jermaine Dupri Responds To Getting Called “Irrelevant” + 4 Recent Songs He Produced
Star producer and music executive Jermaine Dupri was interviewed on the I AM ATHLETE podcast and responded to being called “irrelevant” in today’s music by fans.
“I’ve had a hit record every year that you can think of. You just don’t even really realize it.”
Dupri also added that anyone calling him irrelevant is a “reckless statement.”
With no official date yet, Dupri is expected to do a Verzuz against Diddy. The North Carolina native is one of the latest figures in hip-hop to be either called irrelevant or get disrespected, similar to the Migos’dead crowd during a performance in 2022.
Dupri is best known as the creator of So So Def Records and a producer for mainly hip-hop and R&B artists since the early 1990s.
Here are some recent songs Dupri has produced that fans may not know about:
Ari Lennox – “Pressure”
Dupri teamed up with Bryan Michael-Cox to co-produce Dreamville songstress Ari Lennox’s song “Pressure” from her 2022 album, Age/Sex/Location. The song reached number 66 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
DVSN – “If I Get Caught”
In July 2022, Dupri produced the track for R&B duo DVSN “If I Get Caught,” a song about cheating and still professing love even after being caught red-handed. The song contains a sample of rap legend Jay-Z’s 2001 song “Song Cry,” and he cleared the sample after calling the song “toxic.”
Usher Ft. Ella Mai – “Don’t Waste My Time”
Dupri produced “Don’t Waste My Time” for R&B legend Usher and fellow R&B singer Ella Mai in 2019. It was the lead single for Usher’s album, Confessions 2, and reached No. 1 on the US Adult R&B Songs chart.
Anthony Hamilton – “ You Made A Fool Of Me”
The music mogul produced Anthony Hamilton’s single “You Made A Fool Of Me” in 2021. The two go way back due to Dupri signing Hamilton to So So Def in 1993. Dupri also produced several songs on his latest album, Love Is The New Black.
21 Savage Calls Nas “Irrelevant”
In November 2022, Atlanta rapper 21 Savage called rap legend Nas “irrelevant” while talking in a panel on the Clubhouse app.
21 Savage said Nas has a “strong fan base” but is not relevant in today’s music. The two rappers would later make a song called “One mic, One Gun,” released that same month.
