Calboy – Dope Boy (Vevo Ctrl)
Another week, another dope Chicago rapper in the Ctrl box. Today we got Calvin Woods, aka Calboy. We rocked with him back in the summer, when he showcased “Envy Me,” the track that brought him to fans’ attention. In essence, that song relies on a contrast between good and bad, right choices and wrong turns. As the story goes, the day he was in the studio, drill producer JTK served him the beat. The drowsy 25-second intro (“Now I lay me down to sleep/I pray the lord my soul to keep,” he mumbles) gives away to a young man bursting with the need to get some stuff off his chest. You could say Cal’s success is simply the product of someone on their grind finally seeing the pay off. The new ‘Long Live The Kings’ EP’ is jam packed with bangers, like “Dope Boy,” which just got the official vid treatment. Dive in, and let the kid from the 147 take you to his side of life.
