A New Chapter for Thaiboy Digital
Thaiboy Digital has undergone many transformations, both in name and in spirit. Born Khazitin Bonleunge, he has navigated various monikers throughout his career—from Thaiboy Goon to the Legendary Member—but to his inner circle, he remains simply Nino. His latest evolution, which he notes translates to “seeker of wisdom” in Thai, marks a period of profound reflection and creative renewal. Sitting in Brooklyn Bridge Park, the artist exudes a quiet confidence, his signature silver jewelry and slicked-back hair serving as subtle markers of a career that has defied expectations.
His journey has been anything but linear. After moving to Sweden at age eight, he became a pivotal figure in the early 2010s underground scene alongside Bladee, Ecco2k, and Whitearmor as part of the influential collective Drain Gang. However, his forced departure from Sweden in 2013 served as a traumatic turning point, pushing him back to Thailand and forcing him to rebuild his life and sound from the ground up.
The result of this journey is his new LP, Paradise. Moving away from the moody, atmospheric trap that defined his early work, the album embraces the high-energy electronic dance music that soundtracked his youth in Stockholm and the vibrant 3cha sounds he discovered upon returning to Bangkok. It is a record that balances the euphoria of the club with the bittersweet nostalgia of a life lived across continents.
The Sound of Paradise
Recorded in collaboration with the Swedish trio swedm®, Paradise is a testament to Thaiboy’s ability to synthesize disparate influences. Tracks like “Irish Tears” capture a specific kind of melancholy—the feeling of walking out of a club into the sunrise, where the beauty of the moment is tinged with the sadness of its transience. “You get sad because it’s so beautiful,” he explains. “That’s what an Irish tear should be.”
The album’s concept is rooted in a sense of escapism. In a skit at the start of the record, Thaiboy portrays a taxi driver taking a passenger to “Paradise,” noting that while the trip is free, the return journey costs the passenger their memories. It is a fitting metaphor for the record’s 36-minute runtime—a blissful, hedonistic bender that invites the listener to lose themselves in the rhythm.
Living the Dream
Today, Thaiboy’s definition of paradise is grounded in stability and family. With his own label, Bank of Star Sound System, and a clear vision for his artistic future, he has successfully merged his identities as a businessman, a father, and a performer. He credits his ability to navigate these roles to a simple philosophy: “You gotta have the sauce, but you can’t get lost in the sauce.”
While he has found peace, the desire to explore remains. He no longer longs for the past, but rather for the unknown. As he looks toward the future, he remains committed to the act of creation, eager to stir up his perspective and find new ways to express the complexities of his reality. For Thaiboy Digital, paradise is not a destination, but a state of constant, evolving discovery.
