Thaiboy Digital has undergone many transformations. Born Khazitin Bonleunge, he has navigated various monikers—from Thaiboy Goon and DJ Billybool to the Legendary Member—but to his inner circle, he remains simply Nino. His latest evolution, however, is less about a name change and more about a state of mind. As he sits in Brooklyn Bridge Park, the artist reflects on his journey, his new LP Paradise, and the wisdom he has gathered along the way.
A New Sonic Horizon
His recent North American tour served as a proving ground for Paradise, a record that marks a distinct departure from the moody, atmospheric Swedish rap he helped pioneer in the early 2010s alongside Bladee, Ecco2k, and Whitearmor as part of the influential collective Drain Gang. Collaborating with the Swedish trio swedm®, Thaiboy has crafted a sound that pays homage to the electronic dance music that defined his teenage years in Stockholm, while integrating the vibrant 3cha rhythms that provided him solace during his return to Thailand.
When the album dropped on May 8, Thaiboy was initially uncertain how his dedicated fanbase would react to the shift toward EDM. Yet, the response was immediate and euphoric. During his live performances, the energy was palpable as he bridged the gap between his trap roots and his new, high-energy dance cuts. Tracks like “Irish Tears” capture this duality perfectly—a song that feels like a sunrise after a long night, blending introspection with the pulse of progressive house.
The Architecture of Paradise
Thaiboy’s life story is deeply intertwined with the lore of his music. After being forced to leave Sweden in 2013, he faced a period of profound uncertainty. His eventual relocation to Thailand and the subsequent creative growth he experienced there—culminating in the formation of his own label, Bank of Star Sound System—have shaped the optimistic outlook found on Paradise. For Thaiboy, this album is a literal and figurative destination.
“When you go back to the biblical stuff, the Garden of Eden, there’s not a lot of depictions of how paradise looks,” he explains. “I wanted to create that.” By merging his identities—the rapper, the producer, the father, and the businessman—he has found a sense of abundance. He no longer looks back with longing, but rather toward the unknown, eager to continue evolving and creating something entirely new.
