Tory Lanez’s Quarantine Radio Gives Back

Back in May 2020, Tory used the popularity of his Quarantine Radio to do good. Lanez launched his Dream City Fund to benefit COVID-19 relief efforts.

The fund is a collaboration between The Dream City Project, which he founded with his father in 2012 to help inspire and mentor youth, and the Dream Center, a Los Angeles-based charity. Together, they will raise money to provide meals and diapers for underserved families in Los Angeles and other communities nationwide. To kick things off, Lanez has pledged to cover the cost of the first 50,000 diapers, which Amazon Music has promised to match. (CNN)

Lanez also came forward to speak on the importance of using his platform to help families get through the entire nation going into shutdown as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking to CNN from Los Angeles last week, Lanez said he felt compelled to assist struggling families because it wasn’t too long ago that he was struggling himself.”It’s very important for any artist to give back because at some point you were regular, too. At some point, you were a regular person just like everyone else,” Lanez said. “I always tell artists people feel exactly how you (felt) when you were in that place.” (CNN)

The Quarantine Radio Format

Tory’s popular quarantine broadcasts featured everything from celebrity cameos to dancing and antics.

Today’s diarist is rapper and R&B singer Tory Lanez, who amid the coronavirus pandemic has gone viral with millions of new followers on Instagram and upwards of 350,000 simultaneous viewers for his popular “Quarantine Radio” Instagram Live show, where he plays sound clashes (or music mashups), hosts dance competitions and welcomes famous friends – including Justin Bieber, Drake and Timbaland. The At-Home Party

At the start of the national shutdown, Lanez found himself in rare company with the popular Verzuz face-offs and DJ D-Nice putting on popular party broadcasts.

The concept is simple: Lanez sits on his couch with a blunt and a hand mic, durag untied, and hams it up for several hours while playing some playlist favorites and inviting guests “onstage” to wild out. He’s a great showman: Behind maybe last Saturday’s DJ Premier–RZA beat battle, it’s been some of the best content on offer since IG Live became the new radio a little over a month ago. It began with Lanez watching DJ D-Nice’s much ballyhooed Club Quarantine and figuring it might be fun to have sound clashes with his friends. It’s a much better medium for him to express horniness on main, as well as his affinity for great pop songs: His first set consisted mainly of old stuff “from the ’90s, like ’NSYNC and Britney Spears.” Then Bryson Tiller joined the livestream. And then Justin Bieber. And from there it continued to snowball—there have been as many as 310,000 viewers at a time (when Drake was on).  (The Ringer)
