Lucy Bedroque on His Rap Name, Working with Prettifun, and ‘Unmusique’

Lucy Bedroque is part of a broader wave of artists whose work straddles the line between hip-hop and electronic music. Alongside collaborators like Slayr, 9lives, and ezcodylee, his recent output has been characterized by a digicore resurgence—a sound that prioritizes emotionally charged lyrics and intense, maximalist production. While Bedroque may resist easy categorization, his music is undeniably focused on ensuring that raw, personal expression feels as titanic as his 808s.

Bedroque’s earlier work, including his output under the moniker lostrushi, often leaned into a plunderphonics ethos, stitching together disparate samples with a sense of urgency. However, his latest project, Unmusique, represents a shift toward a more aggressive, hard-hitting sound designed to detonate moshpits. With features from artists like prettifun and Jack Zebra, the record marks a significant breakthrough moment for the artist.

The Evolution of a Persona

When discussing his transition from lostrushi to his current identity, Bedroque explains that the name “Lucy” has always served as his primary persona. The addition of “Bedroque”—a nod to a brand he admires—solidified the identity. “It’s a mix of both, and I think Lucy and Bedroque matched together very well,” he notes.

Regarding his creative process on Unmusique, Bedroque admits that the project was a deliberate departure from his previous self-produced work. By collaborating with other producers, he sought to challenge his own norms. “It was straying away from my norm… Hence, Unmusique—it’s like, not music,” he explains.

Looking ahead, Bedroque remains focused on his collaborative efforts, particularly his work with the collective ROYGBIV, which includes prettifun and egobreak. With new music on the horizon—including a track that samples Deadmau5—the artist continues to refine his sound while maintaining the authentic, DIY spirit that defined his early career.
