Interview magazine brought together a legendary queen of R&B and a current queen of hip-hop for a wide-ranging discussion. Grammy-winning rapper Cardi B was interviewed by Hall of Fame diva Mariah Carey, touching on a variety of topics.
Cardi B + Mariah Carey Talk Celebrity Friendships
Cardi B opened up to Mariah Carey about everything from childhood insecurities, body enhancement surgeries, her background as a stripper, the pressure to drop her upcoming album and social media culture. The multi-talented performer also talked about about her hesitation to get close to other celebrities.
“I don’t want to get close to a celebrity and feel like we have a connection, and then out of nowhere they do some funny sh*t and disappoint me. I’ve always had the same friends. I’m very loyal. If I’m your friend, I’m going to always ride hard for you. But if you don’t ride hard for me or you do some funny shit, I’m going to feel a certain type of way. My husband always tries to tell me, ‘You can’t think like that because you’ve got to network and this is not real life. You got to understand that.’”
Cardi B Explains The Process Behind Her Style
As much as she is a rap superstar, Cardi is also a fashion and style icon. Mariah asked Cardi how she puts her looks together and got some insight on the glam team’s process.
“We always come up with things together. Let’s say I want to wear a shirt: I’ll send the shirt to my stylist and he will put an outfit together. Then I’ll hit up my hairstylist and we’ll decide what hairstyle goes with the fashion, because we don’t always have the same ideas.”
Cardi Reveals Which Artists Inspired Her
CB talked about growing up in New York and hearing Notorious B.I.G. being played outside every day. But two of the female rappers who inspired her to pursue music were a couple of Southern artists: Missy Elliott and Trina.
When I saw Missy Elliott take off her head in a music video, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is so strange. I want to do that when I grow up.’ And then I started seeing girls like Trina, and I was like, ‘She’s so sexy. I want to talk like that when I grow up.’ I always wanted to be what my mom didn’t let me be. I wanted to wear small shirts and have my belly out and wear little kitty heels.
