50 Cent sat with The Breakfast Club for an interview where one of the co-hosts, Charlemagne tha God, asked why he didn’t sign J.Cole to G-Unit before his rise in the rap game.
The Power Universe mogul said, “To me J. Cole , Kendrick Lamar…these artists existed early on when I fell in love with hip-hop, with artists like Talib Kweli, Mos Def, A Tribe called Quest and Common”.
50 Cent said he was also looking for street representation, which he would later have with G-Unit rappers, but also credits J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar for being conscious rather than “street” to bring more of a balance to rap.
50 Cent called J.Cole and Kendrick Lamar “smart and conscious” and “humble,” which he said was not necessarily present at the time.
Additionally, 50 Cent referenced his 2007 beef with Kanye West as an example of knowing a shift had occurred with non-street rappers becoming more in demand.
50 Cent To Keep Venturing Out
Already known for hip-hop and television, 50 Cent looks to get started promoting comedy shows.
The rapper-turned-mogul has announced the lineup for his Tycoon Houston Comedy Music Fest, which will begin on August 25.
The event will have performances by artists such as Fetty Wap, Jeremih, Flo Rida, Jacquees, and more.
Comedians set to perform are Lil Duval, Gary Owen, B-Simone, Michael Blackson, and others.
