Rap Blog is a weekly showcase of a standout rap song.
I’ve been haunted for five months now, liable to randomly exclaim, “If I had a dollar for every faithful bitch in the world my account’d be empty” or “I ain’t never dropping no mid!!!!!” Good rappers convince you they’re the best alive while their songs are playing; better rappers like Veeze and Rylo Rodriguez casually drop lines that ring in your head while listening to other people’s music.
The February snippet for “F*cked a Fan” is just one such instance of greatness. The duo hit casual dance moves in a parking garage to their bars: “The real n***as dying they tryna extinct ’em / If I had an opp they’d be finding ’em stinkin’,” Veeze sighs before punting to Rylo, whose verse is so perfect you could pull any line out and walk away impressed. “It’s too many fish in the sea, if she want some Shark Lock boots I buy her Givenchy,” he reels off breathlessly. “Rap shit I had to make it / My hype man a felon he couldn’t even fly to the venue.”
“F*cked A Fan” more than lives up to the thrilling promise of that wintertime snippet from Veeze’s very first line: “I’m the reason n***as even wanna boss up.” Later, he offers some advice for America’s flailing executive branch, muttering, “Chrome Heart my glasses like substitute teacher / Joe Biden needa make hating illegal.” As on his late May single “Pop Yo Shit,” the Detroit rapper remains unflappable and hilarious, layering a bizarre twist on every flex.
The pairing brings the absolute best out of Rylo, an already-poised lyricist who can slide all over a beat as easily as breathing: “I crack the seal on an Akorn bottle, ain’t never seen no squirrel get near us,” he harrumphs near the song’s close. The Brent Rambo and Kyuro beat unfurls like the music in a blockbuster action flick, constantly ratcheting up the energy (Veeze lowkey gives Wolverine, while Rylo comes across like Bruce Banner with a pint). Every superhero has their theme music.
