Lucy Dacus is putting her money where her mouth is. The indie rock singer and songwriter announced on Wednesday that she’s pledging $10,000 in donations to help fund surgeries for transgender people. “the government will never be the source of our validation or protection,” Dacus wrote on X. “we have to do it ourselves.”
It comes at the heels of several fraught years for trans people around the country as dozens of states have passed anti-trans legislation completely banning or limiting access to gender-affirming care for transgender youth. President Trump doubled down on those sentiments during his inauguration speech on Monday, declaring that the U.S. will only have two official genders: male and female. On Wednesday morning, he followed through on that promise, signing executive orders proclaiming that the U.S. government will recognize only two sexes, as well as end diversity, equity and inclusion programs inside federal agencies.
Per Dacus, she’ll be doling out her donations in $500 increments to people who share GoFundMe or donation pages under her X post. She’s also encouraged others with the means to donate to “scroll through and make donations” as well.
