Hip-Hop Stands Up For Nigeria
Over the past few days, various hip-hop artists have come forward and joined the #EndSARS movement. Music mogul Diddy shared a perspective from rap artist Burna Boy about the importance of ending more than just the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
SARS Has Ended
Following global attention placed on SARS, the Nigerian government placed an immediate end to the unit and provided residents with updates on getting justice for alleged victims.
All the officers in the Sars squad – widely accused of unlawful arrests, torture and murder – are to be redeployed, the presidency said, and a new arrangement to replace the squad is being worked on. Meanwhile, Nigeria’s chief of police said a team of investigators – including civil society organisations and human rights bodies – would be set up to investigate alleged abuses by Sars. (BBC)
More To Come
Despite the perception of peace coming from the end of SARS, residents believe there is more work to be done to help end police brutality once and for all.
