Earlier this year Spike Lee announced plans to remake High And Low, the 1963 movie by the revered director Akira Kurosawa. Speaking in a new interview with Deadline, Lee revealed that his version is a “reinterpretation,” titled Highest 2 Lowest, and will be focused on the music industry. It stars A$AP Rocky in what Lee calls “the main role,” alongside Denzel Washington.

In Kurosawa’s original movie an executive at a shoe company in Yokohama becomes a victim of extortion when his chauffeur’s son is kidnapped by mistake and held for ransom.

“In Kurosawa’s film, [actor] Toshiro Mifune is a shoemaker,” Lee told Deadline. “In our film Denzel Washington is a music mogul with his own label and his reputation as the best ears in the business. So, this is the fifth film with the dynamic duo.”

Lee previously directed Washington in Mo’ Better Blues, Malcolm X, He Got Game, and Inside Man. Highest 2 Lowest has no confirmed release date but will arrive in theaters through A24 before later streaming on Apple TV+. As previously reported, Ice Spice will also appear in the movie.
