Slime Dollaz floats on “pesos”

Rap Blog is a weekly showcase of a standout rap song.

Like most modern, enterprising rappers, Slime Dollaz hasn’t let a little incarceration slow him down completely. Since the South Carolina-based underground heavyweight was locked up in late 2023, he’s managed to release three full-length projects (Nobody Safe, Memories In Hell, and Slimes & 808s 2) as well as a string of loose singles. He’s ensured there’s something for every fan that’s following him for the long haul: His plugg can be either pristine and dreamy, red-eyed and tweaking, or pumped full of Sonic The Hedgehog power-ups, Popstar Benny-style.

“pesos,” his new track with frequent collaborator DJ Slimebxll, heads straight to the clouds. DTM Life’s beat, swaddled in airy synth patches, sounds like the steam at the top of a gilded sauna; its 808s skip and sputter, in no hurry to break the reverie. It’s Slime Dollaz who shatters the illusion with verses full of anxiety, humanity, and anger, delivered with an exciting off-the-top energy. “Them n***** are goofy and them boys are lame / And I can’t kick it with no goofy / Hold on, I should be ashamed (Why?) / Them boys in the same gang as me.” If you’ve ever been too high on an otherwise beautiful day, you’ll understand the vibe of “pesos” perfectly.
