Chicago-based electronic music group Pixel Grip has claimed that Travis Scott sampled their song “Pursuit” on his new JackBoys 2 song “Kick Out” without credit or compensation.

Pixel Grip vocalist Rita Lukea told CBS News Chicago that she noticed the sample as she listened to Scott’s new album following its release on Sunday. “I listened to it again and then in all caps was like, ‘Holy shit!'” she said. She shared the song with drummer Tyler Ommen and synth player Jon Jon Freund who both agreed that their 2021 song was likely part of Scott’s track.

“I can just tell immediately, because like, I worked so hard on this song, it’s like, I can hear the bass line in the background. I can hear the noise that swirls in the very beginning,” Freund explained. “As soon as I had headphones on, I was like yo, y’all, this is just a sample,” Ommen added.

The band also revealed they received a DM from producer Sean Momberger, who co-produced “Kick Out” (alongside T-Minus and Oz) and is also credited on Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us.”

“Hey the label should be reaching out to clear the sample soon,” he wrote. “Sorry the song wasn’t cleared prior to release. Sadly, an unfortunate part of the business sometimes.” Amidst the apology, the producer also praised the song. “Love ‘pursuit’ I knew it was special right when I heard it,” he added.

The band also took to X on Monday, July 14, to discuss the situation.

“travis scott sampled “pursuit” (without permission) in his new song ‘kick out,’” the group wrote. “I just cant stop thinking about who else extremely famous or powerful in music knows about us and even actively likes our music but refuses to throw us a fucking bone [broken heart emoji]. even just mentioning our name or putting us on a playlist or posting us to his instagram story or anything could’ve been a really big moment for us [broken heart emoji] but hey travis, or travis’s team if you see this – im flattered. and Im not trying to shake yall down – would love to talk.”

They added, “all three of us are bad ass producers and you’re trying to infuse an industrial / avante / dark sound in the music, consider inviting us to the stu sometime [heart emoji]. ‘kick out’ is a sick tune. you might like ‘last laugh’ from our latest release ‘percepticide: the death of reality.’”

Pixel Grip released their latest album, Perceptide: The Death of Reality, in June. This fall, they will embark on a 26-date North American headlining tour across North America.
