dexter in the newsagent‘s new mixtape, Time Flies, feels cozily nostalgic in the same way flipping through an old photo album does. The memories and stories the 22-year-old musician sings about on the 12-track mixtape, nurturing a crush, turning 18, missing her father, may feel blurry in the details, but her overarching warmth is intimately familiar. Songs like “Special” and “eighteen” burrow and bloom in hushed dance beats that also sounds like flipping through the radio in the early aughts. It’s music that sounds like something you always knew, that perhaps you lost a while ago and have now found again.

Riding on this inviting trait over the past few years the South London native has garnered a swell of critical acclaim and industry support from artists like Jim Legxacy and Blood Orange, for whom she just opened for in London. The soft, assuredness of her music can sometimes make you forget the tenderness of her age — she missed out on Harry Potter and grew up with Twilight — but that’s just a testament to the wholeness of her craft.

Ahead, we caught up with London’s brightest young voice right now about the first concert she went to and the best advice she’s received while she tore through various gigs this summer in London.

Describe the first show you ever went to.

The first show I ever went to was to see oh wonder at the roundhouse when I was 12 years old. I couldn’t believe how cool going to a concert was and it was a huge stepping stone for me to watch someone actually play music live and it be someone’s actual job. It was very much a “wait i can actually do this as a job” moment.

What was the last movie you watched, and give a short review.

The last movie I watched was the third Harry Potter. I’m currently watching the whole thing for the first time and it’s actually so good I missed out on all the hype when I was kid but yeah it’s so good and the third one really reminds of Twilight in a way with the way it’s shot.

What’s a motto that you think everyone should live by?

Genuinely being so serious, I know this is so cliche, but YOLO cos like, it’s actually so true.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

If it’s meant to be it’s up to me.

What’s your favorite song to play live right now and why?

My favourite song to play live is “special” because I just love that song so much and I love how slowly it unfolds and the story that the song tells. I really just love that song so much.

Describe the best show you’ve played this year so far.

The best show I played this year was when I opened up for Jim Legxacy’s show in Manchester. I performed in Manchester three years ago and I loved it so much. The Manchester crowds are always so lovely and so sweet. I loveddddd that opening set so much.
