On Monday, Bad Bunny released a new single, “ALAMBRE PúA” (Barbed Wire), which he debuted on the first night of No Me Quiero Ir de Aquí (I Don’t Want to Leave Here), his on-going 30-show residency at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico in San Juan. The track is the singer’s first new music since he released his latest album, Debí Tirar Más Fotos, in January.
Benito’s voice weaves above a pulsing beat and lyrical synthesizers in the bomba-steeped track about the pain of leaving a relationship behind. The song is accompanied by a music video that follows the bare feet and white-tiered skirt of a woman dancing on a beach, spinning across sandy patches of grass. During the final minute of the track, the camera zooms out and reveals that the entire video was actually shot onstage at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico, which was decorated to celebrate Puerto Rican culture.
Benito surprised fans by kicking off the first night of his residency, July 11, with the new track, which he performed again on Saturday, July 12 and Sunday, July 13. The 30-show run will conclude on September 14, and will be followed by a world tour that notably skips the U.S. Fans speculated that the decision was a political statement from the artist, who has previously criticized the Trump administration’s policies. Bad Bunny himself has only said that stopping in the U.S. was “unnecessary.”
The No Me Quiero Ir de Aquí residency is the first concert residency to be held in Puerto Rico. The first nine shows are only open to residents of the archipelago, with the remaining dates open to the public. All dates at the 18,500-seat venue have been sold out.
