LimeWire buys Fyre Festival, promises crypto-fuelled future

LimeWire, the early ’00s file sharing service that rose to prominence post-Napster, has announced its acquisition of the Fyre Festival brand. The company relaunched in 2022 with an AI and crypto overhaul, and has been revealed as the buyer who successfully purchased the infamous event’s entire brand on eBay for just $245,300.

The future of the Fyre brand does not include a music festival, LimeWire said in a press release. “We’re not bringing the festival back,” LimeWire CEO Julian Zehetmayr writes, “we’re bringing the brand and the meme back to life. This time with real experiences, and without the cheese sandwiches.”

What exactly “bringing the meme back to life” entails will be revealed “over the coming months.” The release promises a new Fyre “that expands beyond the digital realm and taps into real-world experiences, community, and surprise.”

Still, the digital world will be a significant part of Fyre’s future, according to its revamped website. The brand will be integrated with LimeWire’s crypto token $LMWR; holding the token “unlocks early access to campaigns, token-gated merch drops, and insider updates you won’t see anywhere else,” the site reads.

If you’re somehow interested by all this, you can sign up for more updates on the Fyre website. There’s also merch available to buy, if you’re that kind of person.
