Back in 2022, Saba began work with fellow Chicago resident No ID, one of the city’s most iconic producers, on a new collaborative album. The project was nearly released a year ago, but changed direction after the death of Saba’s uncle. “He’s the person who made me fall in love with hip-hop,” Saba says in a press statement. “It made me want to re-approach things; I had to have a lot of conversations with myself that I hadn’t had to have in a long time.”

Today the project, titled From the Private Collection of Saba and No ID, is finally out. The project’s 15 songs began when No ID sent Saba over 100 beats while the rapper was touring. Speaking to Rolling Stone, No ID took a back-to-basics approach to his music. “[Producers are] huge, larger-than-life people who sit in chairs and tell everybody what to do… I felt like, ‘Man, I became too much of a producer. I need to be a beatmaker again.’”
